OBD-II fault code

P00A5: Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Bank 2

What it means

A fault is detected in the Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 circuit for Bank 2. The code does not by itself establish the sensor's location or effect on mixture.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 measures the air temperature at the location assigned to the second intake-temperature sensor for Bank 2. The control module monitors its electrical circuit and sets P00A5 when it detects a fault, without identifying whether the sensor, wiring, connector, or module is responsible.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intake air temperature sensor 2 failed
  2. Open, short, or damaged sensor wiring
  3. Loose or corroded connector
  4. Control module fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Rough idle or hesitation
  • Hard starting in some conditions

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and compare the reported Sensor 2 temperature for Bank 2 with ambient temperature after a cold soak to spot an implausible reading.
  2. Use live data to watch the Bank 2 Sensor 2 temperature as the engine warms and check whether it changes smoothly.
  3. Inspect the Sensor 2 connector and nearby Bank 2 wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or contact with hot or moving parts.
  4. With the wiring diagram, check the sensor circuit for opens, shorts, and poor connections, comparing results with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Test the Sensor 2 element and circuit separately; consider a control-module fault only after the sensor and wiring pass their checks.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the Bank 2 Sensor 2 connector.
  • Clean corroded terminals or repair damaged connector pins.
  • Repair an open, short, or damaged section of Sensor 2 wiring.
  • Replace the Bank 2 Sensor 2 if its test results are outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair or replace the control module only if circuit and sensor tests identify it as faulty.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally and the warning light is steady, a short, gentle drive may be possible, but arrange diagnosis soon because incorrect temperature data can affect fuel economy and emissions. Avoid hard acceleration if it hesitates or runs roughly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
