OBD-II fault code

P00A8: Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit High Bank 2

What it means

The Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 circuit signal for Bank 2 is higher than expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 measures air temperature at the second sensing point assigned to Bank 2, and the control module monitors the circuit carrying its signal. P00A8 sets when that signal is higher than expected; an open signal wire, corroded connector, or wire contacting a power source can cause this condition.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire open
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Rough idle or hesitation
  • Hard starting in some conditions

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and live Bank 2 Sensor 2 temperature to confirm the high-signal condition and the circumstances in which it appears.
  2. Inspect the Sensor 2 connector and harness for disconnected terminals, corrosion, broken wires, or insulation damaged near a power source.
  3. Check that the connector is fully seated and that its terminals grip correctly; watch live data while gently moving the harness to look for a change.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to check the Sensor 2 circuit for an open or an unintended connection to power, following the manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. If the wiring checks out, test the Bank 2 Sensor 2 and control-module circuit against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the Bank 2 Sensor 2 connector.
  • Repair an open signal wire or damaged harness section.
  • Replace corroded or damaged connector terminals.
  • Repair wiring that has contacted a power source.
  • Replace the Bank 2 Sensor 2 if it fails its specified test.

Can I keep driving?

If the warning light is steady and the vehicle runs normally, a short drive may be possible, but arrange diagnosis soon because an implausible Bank 2 temperature signal can affect fueling and emissions. Avoid driving if the engine hesitates or runs roughly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
