What it means
Intake valve solenoid bank 1 control voltage below expected range. Short to ground or low-resistance fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 1 intake valve control solenoid circuit operates the intake valve-control mechanism. P0076 means the control module sees the circuit voltage below its expected range, commonly from a short to ground or a circuit fault that pulls the signal low.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Reduced engine power
- Rough idle or hesitation
- Poor acceleration
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for other bank 1 valve-control codes to see whether the fault occurred during a particular operating condition.
- Inspect the bank 1 intake solenoid connector and nearby harness for chafing, crushed insulation, corrosion, or terminals contacting ground.
- Use the wiring diagram to check the control and supply paths for a short to ground, following the manufacturer's procedure.
- Check connector terminal condition and circuit continuity, since damaged or corroded contacts can disrupt the solenoid circuit.
- Test the solenoid coil against the manufacturer's specification and inspect for mechanical binding if the electrical checks pass.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring shorted to ground in the bank 1 intake solenoid circuit.
- Clean or replace corroded or damaged connector terminals.
- Repair chafed or crushed harness insulation.
- Replace the bank 1 intake valve control solenoid if it fails its coil test.
Can I keep driving?
The engine may have reduced power, rough idle, or hesitation, so avoid high-speed travel and hard acceleration until the fault is diagnosed. Stop driving if the engine becomes difficult to control or runs severely rough.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
