OBD-II fault code

P0083: Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit High Bank 2

What it means

Intake valve solenoid bank 2 control voltage above expected range. Short to power or open ground. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The bank 2 intake valve control solenoid operates a mechanism that changes intake-valve operation, such as valve lift or deactivation where fitted. This code sets when the control module sees circuit voltage above the expected range, which can occur with a short to power, an open in the control path, or an intermittent connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring shorted to battery
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough running or reduced engine performance
  • Poor fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check whether the bank 2 intake-valve fault coincides with a change in engine operation.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 solenoid connector and harness for chafing, moisture, corrosion, pushed-back pins, or a wire pinched against power.
  3. Monitor the relevant live data while gently moving the bank 2 solenoid harness to look for an intermittent change.
  4. Check the bank 2 solenoid control circuit for a short to power or an open, using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. Test the solenoid coil and control-module output against the manufacturer's procedure if the harness checks out.

Common fixes

  • Repair bank 2 solenoid wiring shorted to power or damaged by chafing.
  • Clean and repair corroded, loose, or pushed-back terminals at the bank 2 connector.
  • Repair an open in the bank 2 solenoid control circuit.
  • Replace the bank 2 intake valve control solenoid if its electrical test fails.
  • Repair a confirmed control-module fault after the solenoid circuit passes testing.

Can I keep driving?

Gentle driving may be possible if the engine remains smooth, but avoid heavy loads and hard acceleration because bank 2 intake-valve control may be unreliable. Stop if rough running or power loss becomes severe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
