What it means
Intermittent dropouts or noise on the ambient air temperature sensor A signal — typically a loose connector or chafed wiring.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Ambient air temperature sensor A sends outside-air temperature to the vehicle’s control module, and may also inform the climate-control display. P0074 sets when the signal drops out or becomes noisy intermittently, often as a loose or chafed connection moves with vibration.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Connector loose or corroded
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Outside-temperature display may fluctuate or briefly disappear
- Automatic climate control may behave unpredictably
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check whether the scan-tool ambient-temperature reading jumps, disappears, or disagrees with the stabilized outside temperature.
- Inspect sensor A's connector for looseness, corrosion, moisture, or terminals that do not grip firmly.
- Follow the harness from the sensor and look for chafing or contact with vibrating parts, then gently move suspect sections while watching live temperature data.
- Check connector and harness continuity while flexing the wiring, using the manufacturer's procedure to identify an intermittent open.
- If the wiring remains stable, test sensor A for intermittent output against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose sensor A connector and harness.
- Clean or repair corroded or weak connector terminals.
- Repair chafed wiring and reroute it away from vibrating parts.
- Replace sensor A if its signal drops out during testing.
Can I keep driving?
Driving is generally possible, but the outside-temperature display may fluctuate and climate control may respond unpredictably. Do not rely on the display to judge road icing.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
