OBD-II fault code

P0082: Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Low Bank 2

What it means

Intake valve solenoid bank 2 control voltage below expected range. Short to ground or low-resistance fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The bank 2 intake valve control solenoid operates the intake-valve mechanism, such as a variable-lift or deactivation system where fitted. The control module sets this code when the solenoid circuit voltage falls below its expected range, commonly because the control wire is shorted to ground or the circuit has another low-voltage fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough running or reduced engine performance
  • Poor fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live data or related codes for evidence that the bank 2 intake-valve system fault occurs during commanded operation.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 solenoid connector and harness for chafing, exposed wire, corrosion, or contact with ground.
  3. Use the manufacturer's wiring information to check the bank 2 solenoid control circuit for a short to ground.
  4. Test solenoid coil resistance and circuit continuity against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring and solenoid pass, verify the control-module output using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed bank 2 solenoid wiring that is shorted to ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded or damaged terminals at the bank 2 intake solenoid connector.
  • Replace the bank 2 intake valve control solenoid if it fails electrical testing.
  • Repair a confirmed control-module circuit fault after testing the solenoid and wiring.

Can I keep driving?

Drive gently only if the engine runs smoothly, and avoid towing or hard acceleration if it hesitates or loses power. A persistent fault can leave bank 2 intake-valve operation incorrect and worsen performance or fuel economy.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
