OBD-II fault code

P0014: B Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance Bank 1

What it means

The control module detects that camshaft “B” on bank 1 is more advanced than commanded or that its timing control is not performing as expected. “B” usually refers to the exhaust camshaft, but its physical location can vary by engine design.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The variable valve timing system adjusts the bank 1 exhaust camshaft using engine oil. The control module compares requested exhaust timing with camshaft position feedback. P0014 sets when the exhaust cam is more advanced than commanded or its timing control does not perform as expected, often because the oil control valve or oil passages keep it advanced.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Oil control valve stuck (advance)
  2. Sludge in VVT oil passages

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual bank 1 exhaust cam timing at idle and as engine speed changes.
  2. Check oil level, condition, and viscosity against the manufacturer's requirements because oil flow controls exhaust cam timing.
  3. Inspect the bank 1 exhaust oil control valve and wiring for damage or sticking, and check accessible VVT passages for sludge or debris.
  4. Use a scan tool to command exhaust timing changes and observe whether the bank 1 exhaust cam follows or remains advanced.
  5. If oil and valve checks pass, check oil pressure and inspect the exhaust cam phaser and timing components using manufacturer's procedures.

Common fixes

  • Correct low oil level and replace dirty or incorrect oil and filter with the specified grade.
  • Clean or replace a sticking bank 1 exhaust oil control valve.
  • Clear sludge or debris restricting the bank 1 exhaust VVT passages.
  • Repair confirmed low oil pressure or replace a faulty exhaust cam phaser.

Can I keep driving?

Drive gently and avoid high engine speeds or heavy loads while arranging diagnosis, since reduced power or stalling can occur. Stop if oil pressure warning appears, the engine stalls, or rough running becomes severe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
