What it means
The bank 1 exhaust camshaft remains retarded relative to commanded position. Same root causes as P0012 but on the exhaust cam.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The variable valve timing system uses oil pressure to adjust the bank 1 exhaust camshaft. The control module compares the commanded exhaust timing with camshaft position feedback. P0015 sets when the exhaust cam remains more retarded than requested, which may result from a stuck oil control valve or a worn exhaust cam phaser.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Oil control valve stuck (retard)
- Cam phaser worn
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual bank 1 exhaust cam timing, especially during warm-up and changes in engine speed.
- Check oil level, condition, and viscosity against the manufacturer's requirements because unsuitable or restricted oil can prevent exhaust cam movement.
- Inspect the bank 1 exhaust oil control valve connector and wiring, then check the valve and accessible oil passages for sticking or blockage.
- Command exhaust timing changes with a scan tool and observe whether the bank 1 exhaust cam responds from its retarded position.
- If oil supply and valve checks pass, assess oil pressure and inspect the exhaust cam phaser and timing components to manufacturer's procedures.
Common fixes
- Correct low oil level or change dirty or incorrect oil and filter using the specified grade.
- Clean or replace a sticking bank 1 exhaust oil control valve.
- Clear a restriction in the bank 1 exhaust VVT oil passages.
- Replace a worn exhaust cam phaser or repair a timing fault confirmed by testing.
Can I keep driving?
Drive gently and avoid heavy loads because power loss or stalling may worsen. Stop if the engine stalls, runs severely rough, or an oil pressure warning appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
