What it means
The bank 2 exhaust camshaft is more advanced than commanded. Same root causes as P0011 but on the exhaust cam.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Variable valve timing changes the Bank 2 exhaust camshaft position by directing engine oil through a phaser controlled by a solenoid. The module compares the camshaft position with its commanded timing and sets P0024 when the exhaust cam remains more advanced than requested.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Camshaft actuator solenoid sticking or faulty
- Oil passages restricted or oil level or pressure low
- Camshaft phaser sticking or worn
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual Bank 2 exhaust cam timing in live data, noting when the actual position stays too far advanced.
- Check engine oil level, condition, and specified viscosity first because low, degraded, or unsuitable oil can interfere with phaser movement.
- Inspect the Bank 2 exhaust cam solenoid connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or oil contamination.
- Test the solenoid circuit and actuator according to the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification, including whether the valve moves as commanded.
- If oil and electrical checks pass, investigate restricted oil passages and a sticking or worn Bank 2 exhaust cam phaser using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Top up or replace incorrect or degraded oil and filter using the specified grade.
- Clean or repair a contaminated, loose, or damaged Bank 2 exhaust actuator connector and wiring.
- Clean or replace the Bank 2 exhaust cam oil control solenoid if it sticks or fails testing.
- Repair restricted oil passages or replace a sticking or worn Bank 2 exhaust cam phaser if confirmed.
Can I keep driving?
A steady warning light with normal running may allow a short, gentle drive, but avoid high engine loads because incorrect exhaust cam timing can reduce power and increase fuel use. Stop if the engine stalls, runs very roughly, or develops abnormal mechanical noise.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
