OBD-II fault code

P0009: Engine Position System Performance Bank 2

What it means

Same fault pattern as P0008 but on bank 2 of a V or boxer engine. Crank/cam correlation outside spec on the second cylinder bank.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The engine position system compares crankshaft and camshaft timing so the control module can keep valve events synchronized with piston movement. P0009 sets when the signals for bank 2 show an implausible timing relationship, which can point to a stretched or jumped chain on that bank or a sensor alignment problem.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Timing chain bank 2 stretched
  2. Chain jumped one tooth on bank 2

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough idle or engine misfire
  • Reduced power or poor acceleration
  • Hard starting or no start

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live crankshaft and bank 2 camshaft timing or correlation values for when the mismatch occurs.
  2. Check for related crankshaft or camshaft sensor codes, then inspect bank 2 sensor connectors and wiring for damage or loose connections.
  3. Verify the engine oil level and condition, since poor lubrication can affect timing hardware and variable valve timing.
  4. Use the manufacturer's procedure to check crankshaft and bank 2 camshaft signal alignment and sensor reluctor condition.
  5. If sensor signals and wiring are sound, inspect bank 2 timing-chain alignment, chain stretch, guides, and tensioner.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring or connections at the crankshaft or bank 2 camshaft sensor.
  • Replace a faulty or misaligned sensor or repair its reluctor if testing identifies the cause.
  • Correct bank 2 timing-chain alignment if the chain has jumped.
  • Replace a stretched bank 2 chain, worn guides, or faulty tensioner as indicated by inspection.

Can I keep driving?

A timing mismatch on bank 2 can cause misfires, poor acceleration, or a no-start, and continued running may worsen timing-chain damage. Avoid hard acceleration and have the engine checked promptly; stop driving if it runs roughly, loses power, or makes abnormal timing noise.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
