OBD-II fault code

P0005: Fuel Shutoff Valve Control Circuit/Open

What it means

Open circuit detected at the fuel shutoff valve A solenoid (used on diesels to stop fuel flow at engine-off and as anti-theft). Engine may not start or not stop cleanly.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Fuel shutoff valve A is a solenoid that controls fuel flow, commonly on diesel engines, so the engine can stop when commanded. P0005 sets when the control module detects an open electrical path in the valve circuit, such as a disconnected wire or an open solenoid coil.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open wiring or unplugged connector
  2. Shutoff solenoid coil open
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Engine may not start
  • Engine may not shut off normally
  • Reduced power or stalling

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame data and scan-tool status to confirm when the open-circuit fault was recorded and whether the engine-start or shutdown command was active.
  2. Inspect the shutoff valve A connector for a loose plug, corrosion, damaged wiring, or a terminal pushed back into the connector body.
  3. Check circuit continuity from the valve connector to the control module, following the manufacturer's wiring information.
  4. With power isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test the shutoff solenoid coil for an open circuit.
  5. If the wiring and coil pass, check the control module's output to the valve under the manufacturer's test procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the shutoff valve A connector.
  • Reseat or replace a pushed-back or damaged connector terminal.
  • Repair an open or damaged section of valve wiring.
  • Replace shutoff valve A if its coil is open.

Can I keep driving?

The engine may fail to start or may not shut off normally, so do not rely on it for a trip until the fault is resolved. If it stalls, loses power, or cannot be stopped as expected, park safely and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
