What it means
The ECU sees the control voltage of fuel volume regulator A pulled below the expected range, typically a short to ground or a low-resistance fault in the wiring or coil.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Fuel Volume Regulator A controls fuel metering for the high-pressure system, often at the high-pressure pump. P0003 sets when the control module sees the regulator circuit voltage below its expected range, which can result from a short to ground, a regulator coil fault, or a poor electrical connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring shorted to ground
- Regulator coil internal short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard starting or no start
- Engine may stall or run poorly
- Reduced power
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and related codes, then check regulator command and rail-pressure data to understand when the low-circuit condition occurs.
- Inspect the Fuel Volume Regulator A connector for corrosion, damaged pins, moisture, or poor terminal contact.
- Trace the regulator wiring for rubbed-through insulation or a short to ground, especially near the pump and hot or moving parts.
- Test the regulator circuit for shorts and unwanted resistance using the manufacturer's wiring information.
- Measure the regulator coil and verify the control circuit against the manufacturer's specification before suspecting the control module.
Common fixes
- Clean or repair corroded terminals and restore a secure connection at Fuel Volume Regulator A.
- Repair wiring shorted to ground or damaged insulation.
- Replace the regulator if its coil is internally shorted or outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair a confirmed control-module circuit fault after the regulator and wiring pass testing.
Can I keep driving?
The engine may start poorly, stall, or lose power because fuel pressure control can be affected. Avoid driving if it stalls or runs roughly, and stop if power drops unexpectedly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
