OBD-II fault code

P0006: Fuel Shutoff Valve Control Circuit Low

What it means

Control voltage of fuel shutoff valve A is below the expected range, typically caused by a short to ground or low-resistance fault in the solenoid circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Fuel shutoff valve A is a solenoid that controls fuel flow, commonly on diesel engines. P0006 sets when the control module sees the valve circuit voltage below its expected range, often because the wiring is shorted to ground or the solenoid circuit has abnormally low resistance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring shorted to ground
  2. Shutoff solenoid internal short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard starting or no start
  • Engine may stall or run poorly
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live valve command status to identify when the low-circuit reading occurred and whether starting or stalling symptoms match.
  2. Inspect shutoff valve A's connector and harness for rubbed-through insulation, moisture, corrosion, or terminals touching ground.
  3. With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test the valve wiring for a short to ground.
  4. Measure the solenoid coil and circuit resistance, then compare the results with the manufacturer's specification to check for an internal short.
  5. If the harness and solenoid pass, check the control module output and connector terminals under the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair wiring shorted to ground near shutoff valve A.
  • Clean and secure corroded or damaged valve connector terminals.
  • Replace shutoff valve A if its coil resistance is outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair a damaged harness or connector that is pulling the circuit voltage low.

Can I keep driving?

Hard starting, stalling, or reduced power can leave you stranded, so avoid long trips and situations where sudden loss of power would be hazardous. Stop driving if the engine stalls or will not run reliably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
