What it means
The control module monitors active air dam movement and position. It sets this code when the air dam fails to move as commanded or remains stuck.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
How it works
The active air dam moves to manage airflow beneath the vehicle, and the control module checks its position or movement against each command. C0630 is set when the dam does not move as expected or remains stuck, including when an obstruction or actuator fault prevents travel.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Debris or damage obstructing movement
- Bent or binding air dam mechanism
- Actuator failure
- Damaged wiring or poor connection
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Read the code and freeze-frame data, then use the scan tool to check commanded and reported air dam position if those data are available.
- With the vehicle safely parked, inspect the air dam for road debris, impact damage, or anything visibly blocking its travel.
- Check the dam and linkage for bending, binding, or damage that could stop movement.
- Inspect the actuator connector and wiring for loose connections, corrosion, or damaged insulation.
- If the mechanism moves freely and wiring is intact, command the dam with a suitable scan tool and test the actuator and position feedback as specified by the manufacturer.
Common fixes
- Remove debris obstructing the air dam's movement.
- Repair or replace a bent or binding air dam mechanism.
- Repair damaged wiring or a poor actuator connection.
- Replace a failed actuator after confirming its power, control, and feedback circuits.
Can I keep driving?
If the dam is loose or damaged, avoid driving until it is secured so it cannot drag or detach. Otherwise, the main effect is reduced airflow management; observe any additional warning lights and drive accordingly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
