What it means
Generic fault on front axle disconnect actuator. The disconnect decouples the front axle from the drivetrain to save fuel in 2WD mode.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The front axle disconnect actuator engages or disengages the front axle from the drivetrain, typically to allow two-wheel-drive operation. The control module monitors the actuator and disconnect response, and sets C0631 when the actuator or mechanism does not operate as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Front axle disconnect actuator failure
- Disconnect mechanism binding or damage
- Damaged wiring or poor connection
- Low or unstable system voltage
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool that accesses the drivetrain or chassis module to read freeze-frame data and check the commanded front axle disconnect state.
- Check system voltage and related low-voltage codes, since unstable power can interrupt actuator operation.
- Inspect the front axle disconnect actuator connector and wiring for corrosion, looseness, or physical damage.
- Inspect the disconnect mechanism and nearby components for impact damage or binding, following safe vehicle-lifting procedures.
- Command the actuator with a suitable scan tool and test its power, control, and response against the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Correct a weak battery or unstable power connection if it is causing actuator supply problems.
- Repair damaged or corroded wiring and connector terminals at the actuator.
- Repair a binding or damaged disconnect mechanism.
- Replace the front axle disconnect actuator if circuit checks pass and it fails to respond.
Can I keep driving?
The front axle may not change drive mode as intended, so avoid assuming the vehicle is in the selected mode, especially on slippery or uneven surfaces. If the vehicle binds, makes unusual drivetrain noises, or shows other serious warnings, stop and have it checked.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
