OBD-II fault code

C0601: Active Air Dam Control Circuit/Open

What it means

Open circuit on active air dam actuator. The active air dam (front splitter) lowers at speed to reduce drag and lift.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light

How it works

The active air dam actuator moves the front air dam, which can lower at speed to manage aerodynamic drag and lift. The control module monitors the actuator control circuit, and this code sets when that circuit is open so the module cannot properly drive the air dam.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring break
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Active air dam warning light may be on
  • Active air dam may remain in its current position

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and related air dam codes, then note whether the warning appeared during an actuator command or vehicle operation.
  2. Inspect the air dam and actuator for a jam, impact damage, or a connector that has come loose.
  3. Check the actuator harness for a break, pulled wire, pushed-back connector pin, or damaged module connector.
  4. Use the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure to test continuity through the control circuit and check connector terminal contact.
  5. If the circuit is intact, test actuator operation and module output according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose air dam actuator connector and secure the harness.
  • Repair a broken or pulled control wire.
  • Repair or replace a connector with a pushed-back pin or poor terminal contact.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty air dam actuator or control module.

Can I keep driving?

This fault usually leaves the air dam in its current position, but the warning may indicate it cannot adjust as intended at speed. Watch for loose or dragging parts and avoid driving if the air dam is hanging where it could contact the road.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
