What it means
Steering angle does not correlate with vehicle yaw and lateral acceleration during driving.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Stability control compares the steering angle sensor’s account of the driver’s intended turn with yaw and lateral-acceleration data describing how the vehicle is actually moving. C052A sets when those readings do not agree as expected, which can result from an inaccurate or uncalibrated steering sensor or a fault in a related motion sensor or its wiring.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Steering angle sensor signal inaccurate or drifting
- Steering angle sensor calibration or alignment fault
- Yaw or lateral acceleration sensor signal fault
- Wiring or connector fault affecting a related sensor
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Read ABS and stability-control codes and freeze-frame data for C052A and any accompanying yaw, lateral-acceleration, or steering-angle faults.
- Compare live steering angle, yaw, and lateral-acceleration readings during a careful straight-line check and gentle turn to identify which signal appears implausible.
- With the wheels straight, check that the steering-angle reading is plausible and confirm whether calibration is needed after recent alignment or steering work.
- Inspect the steering angle, yaw, and lateral-acceleration sensor connectors and accessible wiring for damage, looseness, or corrosion.
- If the signals remain inconsistent, test the implicated sensor supplies, grounds, and circuits using the manufacturer’s wiring information and diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose or damaged connector or harness affecting the steering, yaw, or lateral-acceleration sensor.
- Calibrate the steering angle sensor if its reference position is incorrect.
- Correct steering alignment or sensor mounting that is making the readings disagree.
- Replace the sensor confirmed by testing to be reporting inaccurate data.
Can I keep driving?
Stability control may be disabled because the system cannot reconcile steering input with vehicle motion; ABS or brake assist may also be affected. Drive cautiously, leave extra stopping distance, and avoid slippery roads or abrupt manoeuvres.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
