OBD-II fault code

C0528: Steering Angle Sensor Module Range/Performance

What it means

The control module monitors the steering angle sensor reading and sets this code when its range or response does not match what the system expects.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The steering angle sensor module measures steering-wheel position for ABS and stability-control calculations. C0528 sets when the reported angle or its response falls outside the expected range or performance, which can result from signal drift, an aged sensor element, or loose mounting that dampens its response.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor reading drifted
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Read ABS and stability-control codes and freeze-frame data to see when the range or performance fault appeared and whether other sensor faults are present.
  2. Watch live steering-angle data while turning the wheel slowly in both directions and check for a smooth, consistent response without unexplained jumps or lag.
  3. Inspect the sensor’s mounting and steering-column attachment for looseness that could let the reading drift or respond slowly.
  4. Check the sensor connector and wiring for damage or poor contact that could distort the reported angle.
  5. If the mounting and wiring are sound, use the manufacturer’s procedure to verify sensor calibration and determine whether the sensor is outside its permitted performance range.

Common fixes

  • Secure loose steering angle sensor mounting.
  • Repair a damaged or poorly connected sensor harness or connector.
  • Perform the manufacturer’s steering angle calibration if the reading is out of range because of calibration drift.
  • Replace the sensor if testing confirms that its readings remain outside the manufacturer’s performance specification.

Can I keep driving?

Stability control may be disabled because it cannot rely on the steering-angle reading, though normal braking may remain available. Drive cautiously, leave extra stopping distance, and avoid slippery roads or abrupt steering.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
