What it means
Steering angle sensor not calibrated — required after wheel alignment, suspension service or sensor replacement.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The steering angle sensor module must have a learned reference position so stability control can interpret steering input correctly. C0529 indicates that this calibration is missing or was not completed successfully, often after sensor replacement, alignment, or suspension work.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Required calibration not completed
- Calibration lost after sensor or module replacement
- Calibration procedure interrupted or unsuccessful
- Steering alignment or sensor position outside the calibration range
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Read ABS and stability-control codes and freeze-frame data to confirm C0529 and identify any accompanying steering or wheel-alignment faults.
- Check live steering-angle data with the wheels pointed straight ahead and compare the displayed position with the actual steering position.
- Ask whether an alignment, suspension repair, sensor replacement, or module replacement preceded the fault, since these can require calibration.
- Inspect the sensor mounting and confirm the steering wheel and front wheels are properly aligned before attempting calibration.
- Perform the manufacturer’s steering angle calibration procedure with a suitable scan tool, then rescan to confirm the fault clears.
Common fixes
- Complete the required steering angle sensor calibration with a suitable scan tool.
- Correct steering or wheel alignment that prevents the sensor from reaching its calibration range.
- Repair loose sensor mounting or wiring that interrupts calibration.
- Replace a faulty sensor or module if calibration repeatedly fails and diagnostics confirm the component fault.
Can I keep driving?
Stability control may be unavailable until the steering angle reference is restored; ordinary braking may still work. Drive cautiously and avoid slippery conditions or abrupt manoeuvres until the warning clears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
