OBD-II fault code

C0527: Steering Angle Sensor Module Mechanical

What it means

Mechanical fault on the steering angle sensor — encoder disc damaged or sensor housing loose on the column.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The steering angle sensor assembly detects steering-wheel rotation so stability control can compare the driver’s intended direction with the vehicle’s motion. C0527 indicates a mechanical problem with the sensor assembly, such as damage to its encoder or coupling, a loose mounting, or misalignment at the steering column.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Damaged steering angle encoder or mechanical coupling
  2. Loose sensor or housing mounting
  3. Steering column damage affecting sensor alignment
  4. Physical damage to the sensor assembly

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Read ABS and stability-control codes and freeze-frame data to check for related steering-angle or calibration faults.
  2. View live steering-angle data while turning the wheel slowly from side to side and note any sticking, jumps, or missing change that could reflect mechanical damage.
  3. Inspect the sensor housing and mounting on the steering column for looseness, visible damage, or signs that the column or sensor was recently disturbed.
  4. Check the steering column and sensor coupling for damage or movement that could prevent the sensor from following wheel rotation.
  5. If the mechanical assembly appears intact, follow the manufacturer’s inspection procedure to assess sensor alignment and distinguish a mechanical fault from an electrical one.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose steering angle sensor housing using the manufacturer’s procedure.
  • Repair or replace a damaged encoder or mechanical coupling.
  • Correct steering-column damage or sensor misalignment that affects the sensor’s movement.
  • Replace the damaged sensor assembly and complete any required calibration.

Can I keep driving?

Stability control and possibly ABS functions may be unavailable, so the vehicle may not respond as expected during a skid or hard stop. Drive cautiously and avoid high speeds or slippery conditions; stop if steering operation or braking is affected.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
