OBD-II fault code

C0509: Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The module detects a right-front wheel-speed sensor signal above the expected range. This indicates an electrical signal fault; the code alone does not establish that other vehicle functions are disabled.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The ABS module monitors the electrical signal from the right-front wheel-speed sensor as it reports wheel rotation. This code sets when the signal rises above the expected range, which can happen if the signal wire is shorted to power or the circuit is otherwise damaged.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to power
  2. Open or damaged wiring
  3. Damaged connector
  4. Faulty wheel-speed sensor

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live wheel-speed readings to see whether the right-front value is implausibly high or differs from the other wheels.
  2. Inspect the right-front sensor wiring and connector for damaged insulation, loose terminals, corrosion, or contact with a power wire.
  3. Check the right-front sensor seating and inspect the tone ring or encoder for visible damage or debris.
  4. Test the right-front signal circuit for a short to power and check for opens or poor connections.
  5. Test the right-front sensor and circuit according to the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a sensor fault from wiring damage.

Common fixes

  • Secure the right-front sensor connector and repair loose terminals.
  • Repair wiring that is shorted to power or has damaged insulation.
  • Replace a damaged right-front connector.
  • Replace a faulty right-front wheel-speed sensor.
  • Repair or replace a damaged right-front tone ring or encoder if it is causing the abnormal reading.

Can I keep driving?

ABS and stability control may be disabled, though the base brakes may still work. Drive cautiously, leave extra stopping distance, and avoid slippery roads or hard braking until the fault is fixed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
