OBD-II fault code

B0012: Right Front/Passenger Frontal Stage 2 Deployment Control

What it means

The restraint control module detected a fault in the passenger frontal airbag stage 2 deployment control circuit. The airbag may not deploy as intended in a crash.

How it works

The passenger frontal airbag’s second deployment stage is controlled through a dedicated squib circuit monitored by the restraint control module. B0012 identifies a fault in that stage 2 control path, but the code alone does not say whether the cause is an open circuit, a connector fault, or an internal airbag fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Stage 2 squib circuit open
  2. Faulty connector at passenger airbag
  3. Passenger airbag module internal fault

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Use an SRS-capable scan tool to read B0012’s subfault and freeze-frame data before clearing the code.
  2. Follow the manufacturer’s SRS safeing procedure, then inspect the passenger airbag stage 2 connector for looseness, corrosion, or damaged pins.
  3. Inspect the stage 2 wiring for breaks, pinching, or shorting, and check the circuit with the manufacturer’s specified SRS test method.
  4. If the connector and wiring are sound, test the passenger airbag module’s stage 2 circuit according to the manufacturer’s procedure.
  5. Repair the confirmed cause, clear the code, and rescan to check that B0012 stays cleared.

Common fixes

  • Repair or replace a faulty passenger airbag connector or terminals as specified.
  • Repair an open or damaged wire in the passenger stage 2 circuit.
  • Replace the passenger airbag module if its internal stage 2 circuit is confirmed faulty.
  • Address a restraint control module fault only if circuit and airbag checks point to the module.

Can I keep driving?

The airbag warning light means the passenger frontal airbag’s second stage may not deploy as intended. Arrange prompt SRS repair and avoid unnecessary driving, since crash protection can be reduced.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
