OBD-II fault code

B0014: Driver Knee Airbag Deployment Control

What it means

The restraint control module detected a fault in the driver knee airbag deployment control circuit. The airbag may not deploy as intended in a crash.

How it works

The driver knee airbag is a low-mounted restraint intended to help protect the driver’s lower body, and the restraint control module monitors its deployment circuit. B0014 sets when that module detects a fault in the driver knee airbag circuit, which may prevent the airbag from deploying as designed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Squib circuit open or shorted
  2. Airbag connector loose

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Read SRS freeze-frame and subfault information with a capable scan tool to identify the driver knee airbag circuit condition.
  2. Follow the manufacturer’s SRS safeing procedure, then inspect the driver knee airbag connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or physical damage.
  3. Check the circuit for an open, short, or poor terminal contact using the manufacturer’s specified SRS test method.
  4. If the connector and harness pass, test the driver knee airbag module and restraint control module following the service information.
  5. After repair, clear B0014 and rescan to confirm the driver knee airbag fault has not returned.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair the loose driver knee airbag connector using the specified SRS procedure.
  • Repair damaged wiring or terminals in the driver knee airbag circuit.
  • Replace the driver knee airbag module if it fails its specified circuit test.
  • Repair or replace the restraint control module if diagnostics confirm it is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

The warning light means the driver knee airbag may not deploy in a crash, reducing lower-body restraint protection. Minimize driving until the fault is repaired, and do not probe the airbag circuit with standard test equipment.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
