Amber and yellow lights

Turbocharger fault

What it means

This warning indicates that the engine or boost-control system has detected a problem related to turbocharger operation. Amber generally means have the fault checked soon; the exact warning and colour vary by manufacturer, and a flashing or red warning may call for more urgent action.

What the symbol looks like: A turbocharger warning may show a stylised turbine or “TURBO” text, but there is no single standard dashboard symbol for a turbocharger fault.

Why it comes on

  • A split, loose, or leaking intake or boost hose
  • A fault in the turbo boost-control actuator or its wiring
  • A blocked or faulty boost-pressure sensor
  • A turbocharger fault
  • An exhaust or emissions fault affecting boost control

What to do

  1. Reduce engine load and avoid hard acceleration
  2. Check the owner’s manual for the warning’s exact meaning
  3. If there is smoke, a loud new noise, loss of power, or a red warning, stop safely and seek assistance
  4. If the warning remains, arrange a diagnostic check soon

Can I keep driving?

If the warning is amber and the engine runs normally, a short, gentle drive to a repairer may be possible. Avoid towing, high speed, and heavy acceleration; stop if power drops sharply, smoke appears, or the engine makes unusual noises.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
