What it means
Turbocharger/Supercharger Wastegate Solenoid "A" Low: the control module has detected this fault condition. This affects turbo/supercharger boost-pressure control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Wastegate solenoid A controls boost by directing the actuator that moves the turbocharger wastegate. P0245 indicates that the control module detects a low electrical condition in the solenoid A circuit, which can occur with an open solenoid winding or faulty wiring.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid winding open
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Significant power loss / limp mode
- Possible blue or black smoke from exhaust
- Whistling or hissing sound from intake
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and wastegate solenoid A command data to see when the low-circuit fault occurred.
- Inspect solenoid A's connector and wiring for loose or corroded pins, damaged insulation, or an open wire.
- Check the solenoid winding and circuit continuity using the manufacturer's procedure and compare results with its specifications.
- If the circuit tests are acceptable, check the wastegate actuator and linkage for sticking or damage that could affect boost response.
- Use the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to verify the repair and confirm that solenoid A control and boost response are normal.
Common fixes
- Reconnect a loose solenoid A connector or repair poor terminal contact.
- Repair an open or damaged wire in the solenoid A circuit.
- Replace wastegate solenoid A if its winding fails the specified test.
- Repair a sticking or damaged wastegate linkage if inspection confirms a mechanical fault.
Can I keep driving?
With boost control impaired and power potentially reduced, avoid hard acceleration, towing, and overtaking. Stop if the vehicle loses power sharply, runs abnormally, or develops heavy smoke.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
