What it means
The PCM detected boost pressure above the permitted limit. The code does not establish that the engine was at full load or that a particular protective response or engine damage will occur.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The turbocharger or supercharger A forces more air into the engine, and the control module compares boost-pressure readings with the permitted range for engine operation. P0234 sets when measured boost exceeds the allowed limit; it does not by itself show the driving load or prove that damage has occurred.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wastegate stuck closed (carbon, broken linkage)
- Boost control solenoid failed
- Vacuum/pressure line cracked
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Significant power loss / limp mode
- Possible blue or black smoke from exhaust
- Whistling or hissing sound from intake
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and measured boost in scan-tool data to see when the overboost was detected.
- Inspect the wastegate or boost-control linkage for sticking, damage, or a position that prevents boost from being released.
- Check the boost-control solenoid and its electrical connector for damage, and inspect vacuum or pressure lines for cracks, disconnections, or blockage.
- Inspect the charge-air pipes and intake for restrictions or incorrect connections that could affect boost control.
- Test boost-control operation and compare pressure readings with the manufacturer’s specification before replacing parts.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or replace a cracked or disconnected boost-control line.
- Repair a sticking or damaged wastegate linkage.
- Replace a failed boost-control solenoid after confirming its circuit and operation.
- Repair a charge-air pipe or intake restriction found during inspection.
Can I keep driving?
With reduced power, smoke, or abnormal whistling, avoid hard acceleration, towing, and high-speed driving; stop if the engine runs roughly or smoke increases. Overboost can trigger protective power reduction and, if driven hard, may increase the risk of engine or turbocharger damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
