What it means
Wastegate actuator A does not respond mechanically as expected. Linkage wear or carbon binding. Boost control tracks commanded vs. actual manifold pressure; persistent deviation means wastegate, vanes, hose or actuator are not delivering the requested pressure.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Wastegate solenoid A controls boost by regulating the actuator that moves the turbocharger wastegate. The module monitors the solenoid's response and boost behavior; P0244 sets when the system response is outside the expected range or does not follow the command as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Linkage worn or carbon-bound
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Significant power loss / limp mode
- Possible blue or black smoke from exhaust
- Whistling or hissing sound from intake
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and compare the commanded wastegate solenoid A operation with boost response in live data.
- Inspect the solenoid A connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage that could interrupt control.
- With the engine safely off, inspect the wastegate linkage and mechanism for wear, sticking, or carbon-related binding.
- Check the boost-control hoses and connections for leaks, splits, or loose fittings that could affect solenoid response.
- Test solenoid A and the wastegate mechanism with the manufacturer's procedure to separate an electrical fault from a mechanical one.
Common fixes
- Repair loose or damaged wiring or connector terminals at wastegate solenoid A.
- Replace a leaking or disconnected boost-control hose.
- Repair a worn or binding wastegate linkage or mechanism.
- Replace wastegate solenoid A if testing confirms it does not respond as specified.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration, towing, and overtaking if boost is inconsistent or power is reduced. Stop if the engine loses power sharply, runs abnormally, or produces heavy smoke.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
