OBD-II fault code

P0A03: Motor Electronics Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) Circuit High

What it means

The motor electronics coolant temperature sensor circuit voltage is above the expected range. The code identifies a high circuit signal; it does not describe an engine coolant sensor or its effect on fuel control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The motor electronics coolant temperature sensor measures coolant temperature in the inverter and power-electronics cooling loop. P0A03 sets when the sensor circuit signal rises above the expected range, often because the signal path is open; it identifies a high electrical signal, not an overheated engine coolant reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open circuit in the sensor signal wire
  2. Faulty coolant temperature sensor
  3. Loose or corroded connector

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system or check-engine warning light on
  • Possible reduced hybrid power

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and inspect the scan-tool temperature value for an implausible reading consistent with a high circuit signal.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector for a loose fit, corrosion, pushed-back terminals, or damaged wiring near the motor electronics coolant temperature sensor.
  3. With the hybrid system made safe under the manufacturer's procedures, check for an open in the signal wire and verify connector continuity and terminal contact.
  4. Test the sensor and its reference and ground connections according to the manufacturer's specification.
  5. After repairing the circuit, clear the code and verify that live coolant temperature changes plausibly from a cold start.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose sensor plug or restore a pushed-back terminal.
  • Repair an open or damaged signal wire.
  • Clean or replace corroded sensor connector terminals.
  • Replace the motor electronics coolant temperature sensor if it fails the manufacturer's test.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid heavy acceleration because the hybrid control module may be unable to monitor power-electronics coolant temperature correctly. Stop if reduced hybrid power or an overheating warning occurs; continued operation risks damage to the inverter or motor electronics.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
