OBD-II fault code

P0A02: Motor Electronics Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) Circuit Low

What it means

The motor electronics coolant temperature sensor circuit voltage is below the expected range. The code identifies a low circuit signal; it does not describe an engine coolant sensor or its effect on fuel control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The motor electronics coolant temperature sensor reports coolant temperature to the hybrid control module. P0A02 sets when the sensor circuit signal is lower than the module's expected range, commonly because the signal is being pulled toward ground; it concerns the power-electronics coolant loop, not the engine coolant sensor.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to ground in the sensor signal wire
  2. Faulty coolant temperature sensor
  3. Damaged or corroded connector

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system or check-engine warning light on
  • Possible reduced hybrid power

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check the scan-tool temperature reading for an implausible value that could help confirm the low-signal fault.
  2. Inspect the motor electronics coolant temperature sensor connector and harness for corrosion, coolant intrusion, chafing, or a signal wire touching ground.
  3. With the vehicle safely powered down according to the manufacturer's hybrid procedures, check the signal wire for a short to ground and inspect connector terminal fit.
  4. Test the sensor and its ground/reference circuit using the manufacturer's procedure to distinguish a failed sensor from a harness fault.
  5. Repair the identified fault, then clear the code and confirm that the live temperature reading responds plausibly.

Common fixes

  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Clean or replace corroded connector terminals and secure the connection.
  • Replace the motor electronics coolant temperature sensor if it is pulling the circuit low.
  • Repair a damaged ground or reference connection if testing identifies it.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only as needed and avoid high-power operation because the module may not have a trustworthy motor-electronics temperature reading. Stop if hybrid power falls or an overheating warning appears, as continued use could harm the inverter or related electronics.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
