What is the Vauxhall Astra?
The Astra is a compact family car positioned above the Corsa in Vauxhall’s range. The hatchback is its best-known form, and the name has also been used for estate models. Introduced as a successor to the Kadett, the Astra carried on Opel’s role in the compact-car class. Its generations have brought practical body styles and new technology, including adaptive matrix headlights.
Astra generations
The generations listed here run from Mk4 (1998–2004) and Mk5 (2004–2010), through Mk6 (2009–2015) and Mk7 (2015–2021), to Mk8 (2021–today). The dates overlap because model changes and market launches can fall in different years. The Mk5 added three-door and folding-roof versions, while the Mk6’s three-door models were called GTC. The Mk7 introduced Intelli-Lux LED matrix headlights. The Mk8 brought plug-in hybrid and fully electric power to the range.
Engines, fuel consumption and CO₂
EU registration figures from 2010 to 2020 cover petrol and diesel Astras with engines from 1.0 L to 2.0 L. The most registered configurations included 1.6 L petrol versions in 2010 and 1.4 L petrol versions in 2017 and 2015–2016.
UK VCA figures from 2000 to 2026 include petrol, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric and LPG versions, with engines from 1.2 L to 2.2 L and power from 66 kW (90 PS) to 177 kW (240 PS). The lowest listed figure for petrol, diesel and hybrid versions is 3.3 L/100 km on NEDC. The lowest plug-in hybrid weighted figure is 5 L/100 km on WLTP; it assumes that some driving is electric. NEDC and WLTP are European test procedures, and their results can differ.
