What is the Honda Clarity?

The Honda Clarity was a family-sized sedan offered with several electrified powertrains. In the United States, the name covered a hydrogen fuel-cell car, a plug-in hybrid and a battery-electric version, giving drivers different ways to move beyond a conventional petrol engine.

Honda introduced the Clarity Fuel Cell as a sedan with its fuel-cell system packaged under the bonnet. The plug-in hybrid and electric models followed, sharing the Clarity name while using different ways to power the car. Its single generation ran from 2014 to 2021.

Engines and power

The plug-in hybrid used a 1.5-litre petrol engine alongside electric drive. The fuel-cell version generated electricity from hydrogen, while the electric model drew power from a battery. Each version offered a different routine: hydrogen refuelling, charging from the grid, or a combination of charging and petrol.

How economical is the Honda Clarity?

In the United States, EPA figures cover five versions from 2014 to 2021. The best listed combined rating is 68 mpg. The lowest listed consumption figure is 3.5 L/100 km (EPA); the plug-in hybrid’s official weighted figure is 5.6 L/100 km (EPA). That weighted result assumes some driving is electric, so it does not represent petrol use alone.

Canada’s NRCan listing covers one plug-in hybrid version from 2018 to 2021, with the same official weighted figure of 5.6 L/100 km. The EPA and Canadian 5-cycle procedures differ, so their results are not directly comparable.

Where was the Honda Clarity sold?

The Clarity appears in the United States and Canadian figures. The US range included fuel-cell, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains; the Canadian listing covers the plug-in hybrid. The model brought several of Honda’s electrified technologies together under one name.
