What it means
Generic electrical fault on the cathode bypass valve control. Bypass routes air around the stack during startup or low-load operation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The cathode bypass valve actuator routes air around the fuel-cell stack during conditions such as startup or low load. The control module monitors the valve's control circuit and sets this code when an electrical or communication fault may keep the actuator from responding.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Valve actuator failed
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check all modules for related faults, including whether the code appeared during startup or low-load operation.
- Inspect the bypass valve actuator connector and harness for loose terminals, corrosion, chafing, or damage.
- Check the actuator's control, power, and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification to find wiring faults before replacing the valve.
- If scan-tool actuator control is supported, command the bypass valve and observe whether it responds as expected.
- For widespread communication codes, check gateway routing and the CAN network, including terminating resistance, to the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged bypass valve actuator connection.
- Repair an open or shorted actuator control wire.
- Replace the bypass valve actuator if its circuits are sound and it fails to respond to commands.
- Repair verified gateway or CAN network faults.
Can I keep driving?
A bypass valve control fault can lead to reduced fuel-cell output or limp mode, so avoid hard acceleration and stop safely if power drops sharply or a shutdown warning appears. Arrange prompt diagnosis before relying on the vehicle for demanding trips.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
