OBD-II fault code

U3563: Cathode Bypass Valve Position Sensor Circuit

What it means

Generic fault on the position sensor of the cathode bypass valve. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The cathode bypass valve position sensor reports valve movement so the control module can confirm air is being routed around the stack when needed. This code is set when the position sensor circuit or its feedback data is faulty, even if the valve actuator itself can still move.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan for related bypass valve and communication faults to see whether the code is isolated to position feedback.
  2. Compare commanded and reported bypass valve position in live data, if available, and look for missing or implausible feedback.
  3. Inspect the position sensor connector and wiring at the cathode bypass valve for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or heat damage.
  4. Check the sensor's power, ground, and signal circuits against the manufacturer's specification, including checks for intermittent faults.
  5. If multiple modules report communication problems, test gateway routing and CAN network integrity to the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or intermittently connected position sensor wiring.
  • Clean or repair corroded terminals at the bypass valve position sensor.
  • Replace the position sensor if its circuit checks pass but the feedback remains faulty.
  • Repair verified gateway or CAN network faults.

Can I keep driving?

With only a warning and normal operation, limit demanding driving and arrange prompt diagnosis because the controller cannot reliably confirm bypass valve position. Stop safely if fuel-cell output becomes unstable, power drops, or a shutdown warning appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
