OBD-II fault code

U3560: Cathode Backpressure Valve Position Sensor Circuit

What it means

Generic fault on the position sensor of the cathode back-pressure valve (closed-loop position feedback).

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The position sensor reports how far the cathode backpressure valve has moved, allowing the control module to regulate cathode pressure using feedback. This code is set when the module detects a fault in the position sensor circuit or cannot use its position data.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan for related fuel-cell and communication codes to determine whether the position feedback fault is isolated.
  2. Compare the valve's commanded position with its reported position in live data, if available, and note whether feedback is missing or implausible.
  3. Inspect the backpressure valve position sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or heat damage.
  4. Check the sensor circuit's power, ground, and signal against the manufacturer's specification while checking for intermittent opens or shorts.
  5. If the sensor circuit is sound but communication faults appear across modules, test gateway routing and the CAN network to the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or intermittently connected wiring at the backpressure valve position sensor.
  • Clean or repair corroded connector terminals.
  • Replace the position sensor if its circuit is within specification but its feedback remains faulty.
  • Repair a confirmed gateway or CAN network issue.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle runs normally with only a warning, limit demanding operation and arrange prompt diagnosis because the controller may lose accurate backpressure valve feedback. Stop safely if reduced power, fuel-cell instability, or a shutdown warning develops.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
