What it means
Generic electrical fault on the cathode back-pressure valve control. The valve regulates pressure on the cathode (air) side of the fuel cell stack.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The cathode backpressure valve actuator adjusts pressure on the fuel cell stack's air side. The control module monitors the valve control circuit and sets this code when it detects an electrical or communication fault that can prevent the valve from following commands.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Valve actuator failed
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan all modules for related codes, noting whether the fault appears with fuel-cell power limitation or other network faults.
- Inspect the backpressure valve actuator connector and harness for damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or signs of heat exposure.
- Check the actuator control circuit, power, and ground against the manufacturer's specification before condemning the valve.
- Use scan-tool commands, if supported for the vehicle, to compare the commanded valve response with available feedback and identify a stuck or nonresponsive actuator.
- If multiple modules report communication faults, have gateway routing and the CAN network checked, including terminating resistance, to the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair loose, damaged, or corroded wiring at the backpressure valve actuator.
- Restore a failed actuator power or ground connection.
- Replace the cathode backpressure valve actuator if its control circuit is sound and it does not respond correctly.
- Repair confirmed gateway or CAN network faults.
Can I keep driving?
Because a backpressure valve fault can trigger reduced fuel-cell output or limp mode, avoid hard acceleration and stop safely if the vehicle displays a shutdown warning or loses power. Have the valve control fault diagnosed promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
