OBD-II fault code

U0556: Invalid Data Received From Front Display Interface Module

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the front display interface module. Center-stack screen status, climate readout or infotainment menu state values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

The front display interface module reports screen, climate display or infotainment menu status to other modules. U0556 sets when a receiving module considers data attributed to this interface implausible and rejects it.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame and communication data to find the reporting module and any related display, climate or network faults.
  2. Check whether the center-stack screen, climate readout and infotainment menus respond correctly, noting which display or function is affected.
  3. Inspect the front display interface module's connectors and harness for loose connections, corrosion, moisture or damage.
  4. Use a scan tool to review available display-interface status data while operating the screen and climate controls.
  5. Check for gateway or network faults reported by other modules that may point to message routing problems.
  6. If wiring and routing are sound, investigate an internal interface-module fault or software mismatch, particularly if the module was recently changed.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or corroded wiring and connectors at the front display interface module.
  • Restore a reliable power or ground connection to the module.
  • Correct software or configuration if the module was replaced or programmed incorrectly.
  • Repair or replace the front display interface module if its data remains implausible.
  • Repair a gateway routing issue if other modules show related network faults.

Can I keep driving?

If only the display or infotainment functions are affected and the vehicle operates normally, driving may be possible, but do not rely on a failed climate or vehicle-status display. Stop safely if related warnings or vehicle functions become unreliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
