OBD-II fault code

U0557: Invalid Data Received From Front Controls Interface Module A

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from front controls interface module A. Hard-key, rotary knob or steering-wheel switch state values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

Front controls interface module A reports the states of controls such as hard keys, rotary knobs or steering-wheel switches to other modules. U0557 sets when a receiving module rejects data attributed to module A because those control-state values fail plausibility checks.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame and communication information to identify the receiving module and related control or network faults.
  2. Operate the front hard keys, rotary controls and steering-wheel switches to determine which controls fail or behave intermittently.
  3. Inspect module A's connectors and wiring for looseness, corrosion, moisture or damage, including harness sections affected by recent repairs.
  4. Use a scan tool to compare reported switch or knob states with the controls as they are operated.
  5. Check other modules for gateway or network faults that could disrupt messages from front controls interface module A.
  6. If wiring and routing are sound, investigate module A for an internal fault or incorrect software/configuration, especially after replacement.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or corroded wiring and connectors for front controls interface module A.
  • Restore a poor power or ground connection to module A.
  • Correct the module's software or configuration if it was replaced or programmed incorrectly.
  • Repair or replace module A if its reported control states remain implausible.
  • Correct gateway routing if related network codes indicate that module messages are misdirected.

Can I keep driving?

If only convenience or infotainment controls are affected and no safety-related controls are involved, driving may be possible while you arrange diagnosis. Do not drive if steering-wheel controls needed for safe operation or other vehicle functions are unreliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
