What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from the accessory protocol interface module (APIM). Infotainment/voice/connected service values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.
How it works
The accessory protocol interface module (APIM) supplies infotainment, voice and connected-service information to other vehicle modules. U0554 is set when a receiving module judges data attributed to the APIM implausible and rejects it; it does not by itself identify the bad value.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and save freeze-frame and communication details to see which module logged U0554 and whether it coincides with infotainment or network faults.
- Check which APIM-related features fail, such as the screen interface, voice commands or connected services, and whether the fault is constant or intermittent.
- Inspect the APIM connectors and accessible harness for loose connections, corrosion, moisture or damage.
- Use a capable scan tool to review APIM-related data and network status while operating the affected features.
- Check for gateway or communication codes in other modules that could indicate messages are being routed incorrectly.
- If wiring and routing are sound, check whether the APIM has an internal fault or an incompatible software version, particularly after module replacement.
Common fixes
- Repair loose, damaged or corroded APIM wiring and connectors.
- Restore a sound power or ground connection to the APIM.
- Install the correct software or configuration if the APIM was replaced or updated incorrectly.
- Repair or replace the APIM if it continues transmitting implausible data.
- Address a gateway routing fault if related network codes point to message delivery problems.
Can I keep driving?
If only infotainment, voice or connected features are affected, driving is generally possible, but do not rely on a failed display for information needed to operate the vehicle. If warnings or other vehicle functions appear, stop when safe and have those issues assessed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
