What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from rear lighting control module B. Tail/brake/turn/reverse lamp command vs. feedback values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.
How it works
Rear lighting control module B sends lamp commands and status information over the vehicle network. A receiving module sets U0553 when data attributed to that module, such as tail, brake, turn or reverse lamp command and feedback values, fails its plausibility checks.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and save freeze-frame and network data to identify which module logged U0553 and whether rear lamp or communication faults appeared at the same time.
- Check whether the rear tail, brake, turn and reverse lamps operate as commanded, noting which function or side is affected.
- Inspect rear lighting module B's connectors, grounds and harness for corrosion, water entry, loose pins or damage that could distort its signals.
- Use a scan tool to compare the module's lamp command and feedback values while operating each rear lighting function.
- Check for related network or gateway faults and verify that messages from module B are being routed as intended.
- If wiring and network routing check out, investigate module B for an internal fault or a software mismatch, especially if it was recently replaced.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged or corroded connectors and wiring at rear lighting control module B.
- Correct a poor ground or power connection to module B.
- Update or configure a replacement module to the vehicle's required software version.
- Repair or replace rear lighting control module B if its inputs or transmitted values remain implausible.
- Correct gateway routing or network faults if other modules also report message problems.
Can I keep driving?
If all rear lamps work normally and there are no other warnings, a short, cautious trip may be possible, but verify brake and turn lamps before driving. Avoid driving if required rear lights fail or other vehicle functions are affected, since other modules may reject needed information.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
