OBD-II fault code

U0318: Software Incompatibility with Power Steering Control Module

What it means

A control module has detected that its software version does not match the electric power steering module. Steering may stay functional but become heavy if the EPS goes into a fallback mode.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The power steering control module manages electric steering assistance and shares steering information with other modules. This code sets when another module detects that the power steering module’s software or calibration is incompatible with the vehicle’s expected version.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. EPS software/calibration mismatch
  2. Used EPS module fitted from different vehicle
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan the power steering module and the vehicle network, saving freeze-frame data and noting whether the fault followed steering-system work.
  2. Check that the power steering module’s part and application match the vehicle’s steering system.
  3. Inspect the module connector, power and ground connections, and network wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  4. Read the module software and calibration identification with a capable scan tool and compare it with the vehicle’s configuration.
  5. If the part and wiring are correct, investigate gateway routing and complete the required vehicle-specific coding or programming.

Common fixes

  • Secure or repair the power steering module connector and damaged wiring.
  • Program or configure the power steering module with the correct vehicle software.
  • Replace a mismatched steering module with the correct application, then program it.
  • Correct gateway routing or network communication faults affecting steering messages.

Can I keep driving?

Steering assistance may become reduced or disappear, making the wheel much heavier, especially at low speed. Avoid driving if steering effort changes suddenly or control is difficult, and have the fault addressed promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
