What it means
A control module has detected that its software version does not match the ABS/brake system module. Typically after a partial flash or fitting an unmatched ABS unit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
The brake system control module coordinates electronic brake functions and exchanges information with other vehicle modules. This code sets when a controller detects that the brake module’s software or calibration is incompatible with the expected vehicle configuration, often after an incomplete flash or an unmatched replacement.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- ABS software/calibration mismatch
- Used ABS module fitted from different vehicle
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan the brake system control module and the full network, saving freeze-frame data and noting any recent module replacement or interrupted programming.
- Verify the module part and vehicle application against the vehicle’s braking-system configuration.
- Inspect the module connector, power and ground, and network wiring for poor connections, corrosion, or damage.
- Use a capable scan tool to check the brake module’s software and calibration identification and look for programming or communication faults.
- If the installed part and wiring are correct, check gateway routing and complete the vehicle-specific software recovery, coding, or programming.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose connector or damaged network wiring at the brake system control module.
- Complete or correct the brake module’s software programming and configuration.
- Replace an incompatible brake module with the correct vehicle application, then program it.
- Repair gateway routing or network communication faults interfering with brake module data.
Can I keep driving?
Electronic brake functions may be limited, even if basic braking remains available. Drive cautiously, allow extra stopping distance, and stop safely if braking behavior changes or a brake warning indicates reduced braking.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
