U0320: Software Incompatibility With Power Steering Control Module

What it means

A module reports a software version mismatch with the power steering control module — typically after replacing one of the modules without programming the new unit to match the rest of the network.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The power steering control module manages electrically assisted steering and communicates its software and configuration to other controllers. U0320 sets when a controller detects that the power steering module's reported software or configuration is incompatible with what the vehicle network expects.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module replaced without programming
  2. Wrong part number for the vehicle
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame or event data before clearing codes, noting which controller set U0320 and any steering or network faults.
  2. Check whether the power steering control module or another related controller was recently replaced, updated, or configured.
  3. Inspect the steering module's connectors and wiring for loose connections, corrosion, moisture, or damage that could affect power or network communication.
  4. Read the power steering module's identity, software version, and configuration with a suitable scan tool and compare them with the vehicle's required information.
  5. Check gateway and network fault records for routing problems affecting power steering module messages.
  6. Restore compatible software and configuration using the manufacturer's programming process, then rescan and confirm the fault has cleared.

Common fixes

  • Secure or repair a loose or corroded power steering module connector.
  • Program or configure the replacement power steering control module for the vehicle.
  • Replace an incompatible module with the correct unit for the vehicle.
  • Correct gateway routing or configuration if steering module messages are being misdirected.

Can I keep driving?

If steering effort changes, a steering warning appears, or assistance is reduced, pull over safely and avoid continuing until the cause is assessed; steering may become much harder to control. Even with no obvious change, arrange prompt diagnosis and avoid high-speed or demanding driving.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
