What it means
The ABS controller advertises a software version not supported by the rest of the vehicle network. ABS, ESP and ASR functions are usually disabled until coding is corrected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The anti-lock brake system control module manages ABS functions and supplies data used by stability and traction systems. This code sets when the module’s reported software version is not supported by the vehicle network; incorrect ABS programming or disrupted network communication can cause that mismatch.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wrong ABS software flashed
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan the ABS module and all other controllers, save freeze-frame data, and identify which modules report the incompatible version or related communication faults.
- Check the ABS module’s part and software application against the vehicle, especially if it was recently replaced or flashed.
- Inspect ABS connectors, power and ground connections, gateway connectors, and accessible network wiring for damage, corrosion, or poor contact.
- Use a capable scan tool to compare the ABS software and calibration identification with the vehicle’s required configuration and review gateway communication faults.
- If the hardware and connections are correct, have the CAN network and termination checked against the manufacturer’s specification, then correct the ABS programming or gateway routing as indicated.
Common fixes
- Repair loose or damaged ABS and network connections found during inspection.
- Flash or code the ABS module with the software and configuration intended for the vehicle.
- Replace an incorrectly specified ABS module with the correct application, then program it.
- Repair gateway routing or CAN network termination faults confirmed by testing to the manufacturer’s specification.
Can I keep driving?
ABS, stability control, and traction control may be disabled, so braking can lack those assists in an emergency or on slippery surfaces. Drive cautiously, leave extra stopping distance, and stop if basic braking is affected.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
