OBD-II fault code

U0315: Software Incompatibility with ABS Control Module

What it means

A control module has detected that its software/calibration is incompatible with the ABS module. ABS, ESP/ESC and traction control may be disabled until matching software is flashed.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The ABS control module operates anti-lock braking and provides information used by stability and traction systems. This code sets when another module detects that the ABS module’s software or calibration is incompatible with the vehicle’s expected version.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Software/calibration mismatch with ABS
  2. Used ABS module from different vehicle fitted
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan the ABS module and the rest of the network, saving freeze-frame data and noting any recent ABS replacement or programming.
  2. Check that the ABS module’s part and vehicle application match the vehicle, including its braking and stability-system configuration.
  3. Inspect the ABS module connector, power and ground connections, and network wiring for damage, corrosion, or poor contact.
  4. Read the ABS software and calibration identification with a capable scan tool and compare it with the vehicle’s required configuration.
  5. If the part and wiring are correct, check gateway routing and communication records, then arrange the appropriate ABS coding or programming.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose ABS module connection or damaged network wiring.
  • Program or code the ABS control module to the correct vehicle configuration.
  • Replace an ABS module from an incompatible vehicle with the correct application, then program it.
  • Correct gateway routing or network communication faults affecting ABS messages.

Can I keep driving?

Brakes may still work, but ABS, stability control, or traction control can be unavailable. Drive cautiously, leave extra stopping distance, and avoid slippery roads until the braking and stability warnings are resolved.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
