What it means
The reporting module has lost communication with door switch D. It sets this code when expected switch messages are not received for a specified time.
How it works
Door switch D reports its status to the vehicle network so other modules can determine whether that door is open or closed. The reporting module sets U0218 when it stops receiving the expected messages from switch D for long enough to register a communication loss.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Switch power or ground fault
- Damaged or corroded wiring or connectors
- CAN bus fault
- Door switch D failure
- Low battery voltage
Symptoms
- Door status may display incorrectly
- Door warning or courtesy light may malfunction
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules for communication codes and review freeze-frame data to see whether U0218 appeared with other faults or during low battery voltage.
- Check whether the door status, warning, and courtesy light associated with switch D respond consistently as that door is opened and closed.
- Inspect switch D's connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage, paying attention to any flexible section that moves with the door.
- Using the vehicle wiring information, check the switch's power and ground and verify the network wiring to switch D for opens or shorts.
- If power, ground, and wiring are sound, test switch D and its network communication according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Charge or replace a weak battery if low system voltage is present.
- Clean and secure a loose or corroded switch D connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or a poor power or ground connection to switch D.
- Repair a confirmed network wiring fault affecting switch D.
- Replace switch D if it fails testing with its supply and network wiring verified.
Can I keep driving?
If the door latches securely and no other functions are affected, a short drive is usually possible, but confirm the door is fully closed before setting off. Incorrect door status can leave a warning or courtesy light operating unexpectedly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
