What it means
A control module is not receiving expected messages from Restraints System Sensor G. The code indicates a communication fault; the sensor's specific role depends on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
Restraints System Sensor G sends restraint-related information to other modules, though the sensor’s specific function depends on the vehicle. U0176 sets when a control module does not receive the expected messages from Sensor G within the required time.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor unpowered or wiring broken
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Airbag or restraint-system warning
- Restraint functions associated with the sensor may be impaired
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- Scan the restraint system and other modules for companion communication codes, and save available event data.
- Check battery and charging condition for low voltage that could have interrupted communication with Sensor G.
- Using the manufacturer's restraint safety procedure, inspect Sensor G’s connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or a poor connection.
- Check Sensor G’s power and ground against the manufacturer's specification.
- If those circuits test correctly, test the CAN network and gateway routing, then determine whether Sensor G has failed.
Common fixes
- Correct low battery voltage or a poor battery connection.
- Reconnect Sensor G or repair damaged wiring at its connector.
- Restore the sensor’s power or ground supply.
- Repair a CAN or gateway routing problem, or replace Sensor G if testing isolates the failure to it.
Can I keep driving?
The restraint warning means functions associated with Sensor G may be impaired, and restraint protection cannot be assumed to work normally. Avoid unnecessary driving and arrange prompt diagnosis with the manufacturer's restraint-system safety precautions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
