What it means
The reporting module has lost communication with Restraints System Sensor J. It sets this code when expected sensor messages are not received for a specified time.
How it works
Restraints System Sensor J is a vehicle-specific sensor whose messages help the restraint system assess conditions relevant to occupant protection. The reporting module sets U0179 when Sensor J messages stop arriving for the required interval, often because of a power, ground, connector, wiring, network, or sensor fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor J power or ground fault
- Damaged or corroded sensor wiring or connectors
- CAN bus fault
- Restraints sensor J failure
- Low battery voltage
Symptoms
- Airbag warning light
- Restraint system warning message
- Airbags or pretensioners may be unavailable
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and review freeze-frame data to see whether U0179 appeared with low voltage or other communication faults.
- Check battery and charging-system condition before tracing the sensor circuit, since low voltage can disrupt network communication.
- Locate Sensor J using vehicle service information and inspect its connector and harness for corrosion, damage, loose pins, or water entry.
- Measure Sensor J power and ground and compare the results with the manufacturer's specification.
- Test the related CAN wiring for opens, shorts, or poor connections using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the supply and network checks pass, use the manufacturer's restraint-system diagnostic procedure to confirm whether Sensor J itself has failed.
Common fixes
- Correct a low battery or charging-system fault.
- Clean and secure Sensor J connections or repair damaged wiring.
- Repair a confirmed CAN bus fault affecting Sensor J.
- Replace Sensor J if testing identifies an internal sensor failure.
Can I keep driving?
Airbags or pretensioners associated with Sensor J may not operate as intended in a crash, so get the restraint fault checked promptly and drive cautiously. Avoid disturbing restraint-system wiring unless you are following the vehicle’s safety procedure.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
