OBD-II fault code

U0174: Lost Communication With Restraints System Sensor E

What it means

A control module is not receiving expected messages from Restraints System Sensor E. The code indicates a communication fault; the sensor's specific role depends on the vehicle.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

Restraints System Sensor E sends restraint-related information to other vehicle modules, but its precise role and network arrangement vary by vehicle. U0174 sets when a control module does not receive the expected messages from Sensor E within the required time.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor unpowered or wiring broken
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Airbag or restraint-system warning
  • Restraint functions associated with the sensor may be impaired
  • Other communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan the restraint and other modules for communication codes, and note whether the airbag warning or other faults appeared at the same time.
  2. Check battery condition and available event data for a low-voltage interruption.
  3. Using the manufacturer's restraint-system safety procedure, inspect Sensor E’s connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or looseness.
  4. Check Sensor E’s power and ground according to the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If those circuits are sound, test CAN communication and gateway routing before deciding whether Sensor E has failed.

Common fixes

  • Correct a weak battery or poor battery connection if voltage is low.
  • Reconnect Sensor E or repair damaged wiring at its connector.
  • Restore the sensor’s power or ground supply.
  • Repair a CAN or gateway routing fault, or replace Sensor E if testing isolates the fault to it.

Can I keep driving?

The restraint warning indicates that functions associated with Sensor E may be impaired, and other restraint functions could also be affected. Limit driving and arrange prompt diagnosis; follow the manufacturer's safety procedure when working near restraint components.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
