OBD-II fault code

U0126: Lost Communication with Steering Angle Sensor Module

What it means

A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the steering angle sensor module. Stability or steering functions that rely on steering-angle data may be limited or unavailable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The steering angle sensor module reports the direction and amount of steering-wheel rotation. Stability control uses this input to compare the driver’s intended direction with the vehicle’s motion. U0126 sets when a control module stops receiving the steering-angle module’s network messages, which may disable stability functions that depend on that data.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Steering angle sensor module power or ground fault
  2. Damaged network wiring or connector
  3. Steering angle sensor module failure
  4. Low system voltage

Symptoms

  • Stability control warning
  • Stability control may be unavailable
  • Other communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data and related steering, stability, network, and low-voltage codes to check whether the communication loss is isolated.
  2. Check the battery and charging system, since low voltage can interrupt steering-angle module communication.
  3. Inspect the steering angle sensor module connector and wiring, especially for loose connections, corrosion, or damage near the steering column.
  4. Use a scan tool to check whether the module responds and whether steering-angle data changes smoothly as the wheel is turned while stationary.
  5. If the module has power and ground but remains offline, test its network wiring and connector circuits against the manufacturer’s specification.

Common fixes

  • Correct a weak battery or charging-system problem.
  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded steering angle sensor connection.
  • Repair damaged network wiring or connector terminals.
  • Restore the module’s power or ground circuit.
  • Replace the steering angle sensor module if its supplies and network circuits are sound but communication is absent.

Can I keep driving?

The steering may feel normal, but stability control may not have steering-angle data and may be unavailable. Drive cautiously, avoid abrupt steering and slippery conditions, and arrange prompt diagnosis if steering or stability warnings appear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
