OBD-II fault code

U0125: Lost Communication with Multi-axis Acceleration Sensor

What it means

A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the multi-axis acceleration sensor module. Systems that rely on its motion data may be limited or unavailable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The multi-axis acceleration sensor module reports vehicle motion in more than one direction, data that equipped stability or restraint systems may use. Other modules expect these messages over the vehicle network. U0125 sets when a module stops receiving them, so functions that depend on the sensor data may be limited or disabled.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Multi-axis acceleration sensor module power or ground fault
  2. Damaged network wiring or connector
  3. Multi-axis acceleration sensor module failure
  4. Low system voltage

Symptoms

  • Stability or restraint-system warning
  • Functions using the sensor data may be unavailable
  • Other communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and record freeze-frame data and related network, stability, restraint, and low-voltage codes to identify which systems lost the sensor data.
  2. Check battery condition and charging-system operation, because low voltage can cause communication faults across multiple modules.
  3. Locate the multi-axis acceleration sensor using vehicle service information and inspect its connector and harness for damage, corrosion, or looseness.
  4. Check the sensor module’s power and ground, then use a scan tool to see whether it responds and reports motion data.
  5. If its power and ground are correct but it does not communicate, test the network circuits to the sensor against the manufacturer’s specification.

Common fixes

  • Correct a weak battery or charging-system fault.
  • Secure or clean a loose or corroded multi-axis sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged network wiring or connector terminals.
  • Restore a faulty sensor power or ground circuit.
  • Replace the multi-axis acceleration sensor module if its circuits are sound but it remains offline.

Can I keep driving?

Drive cautiously because stability functions may be reduced, and a restraint-system warning may indicate that an equipped safety function is affected. Avoid abrupt manoeuvres and have any restraint warning checked promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
